[“Introduction: The Curse”]

[August 17th] Thursday – Afternoon
Location: Central, Lisle Holow (Infirmary)
District: 15 (HHS / Holow High School)
POV: Yong Soo

I didn't know how long it took, but when I came to my senses I realized that my eyes must've been opened for a long while, as if I were in a trance all while staring at nothing. I found myself looking at a bright white room. For a moment I flinched, not at all used to the burning sensation as my eyes watered slightly before I shut my eyes closed. I heard the scratching sound of a pencil, but the first thing I realized was that my head was aching. Opening my eyes again, I tried to readjust to the lights until they were dimmed down all of a sudden.

“Is that better?” a woman wearing a white lab coat with glasses had asked. I glanced up at her, noticing that she was holding a clipboard and a pencil; so she must have been the one who was writing.

She was a rather tall woman, maybe she was in her late thirties. Her hair was a black choppy mess; straight shoulder-length hair. Her eyes seemed almost black and beady, as if it were looking straight through me behind her glasses. Frankly she looked intimidating in her simple wine-colored collar shirt and white lab coat.

“...thanks...” I murmured, and without a doubt, I felt and sounded exhausted.

“You're rather lucky,” the woman commented as she sat down on a stool. “Normally a person wouldn't have survived that fall,” she said calmly as I blinked.

I gave it some thought, but I didn't remember anything except for that brief conversation with that black-haired woman with the creepy red eyes. My head throbbed when I tried to remember anything beyond that point.

“...I heard a scream...” I managed to say, remembering that particular cry during my conversation with the mysterious woman in that field of snow. It was a girl's voice and I remembered that I felt… concerned for the person who screamed. However, who was screaming in that desolate place? The woman didn't seem to hear the shout when she was talking to me…

“Well, I believe that she-” the nurse gestured to the girl sleeping lightly at my side. “-was screaming when you fell out of the window. Ever since this morning she wouldn't leave your side even after your injuries were all fixed up. You ought to be more careful; losing a lover is the worse feeling a person can experience… other than torture, of course.”

I looked at the girl at my side in a daze. Her hair was long and wavy; a shade of dark brown and her skin was tan. Despite not knowing who she was (even though being around her gave me a feeling of déjà vu), I felt calm being by her side. Even with her hair all messy with those star hair clips, I thought she looked adorable yet… beautiful. If I had to describe her, I mean.

I was snapped out of my daze when the nurse placed something on my lap; a student ID card. It had a small picture of of some guy with short black hair with a curl. The gray student ID card shined lightly due to the dim lights and three letters were largely imprinted: HHS. The guy's name was 'Im Yong Soo', I'm assuming. There were two other words that caught my eye; one of them was 'Freshman' and the other was…

“…Human…?” I questioned out loud as I looked over at the relaxed-looking nurse.

“Ah… right. That ID's probably going to change soon now that you're not human…” she murmured, scratching her head while smoking a cigarette. Wait, should she be smoking in a school infirmary?

“What?” I questioned, mostly directing that towards her smoking rather than to her comment. Regardless, she simply ignored me and turned back to her desk.

For a moment, the nurse glanced back at me before writing down notes. “…what do you remember?” she asked me.

I blinked as I sat up, wincing when my head throbbed. “A winter wonderland?” I murmured; I was confused, myself. “I remembered that I was surrounded by snow,” I said, forgetting the words the weird lady had told me. “I met a woman by the grave who wore this black dress and she was standing in front of this grave. She also had freaky red eyes with long black hair. I talked with her for a bit, and now I'm here.”

The nurse had paused, the pencil's movements had ceased as the black-haired woman raised a brow at me. “Pardon…?” she muttered, somewhat… baffled? I didn't really know. “I know that it's almost winter and all, but… you met a woman—possibly a vampire or a demon—and you had a conversation out in the snow? That's odd considering that it's still autumn.”

“Pretty much,” I shrugged, confused on why she obviously didn't believe my story. “Wait, demon? Vampire?” Blinking, I felt confused. Demons and vampires don't exist, they're just myths.

“I'd assume you spoke with Aria, but… she's blonde, as opposed to black hair…” the nurse exhaled the smoke, taking the cigarette out of her mouth as she thought for a moment before glancing over to me at the corner of her eyes. “Yes, I said a demon or a vampire. They're the only species on the island that has the potential to change their eye colors to red regardless of their genes for certain situations. Albino's are also the only living beings who would have red eyes, but they all have light hair colors.”

“But vampires and demons are… wh-what…?” I was pretty confused with everything at this point.

There was a moment of silence as the nurse gave this weary look, as if annoyed and exhausted with only talking with me. “You've got amnesia,” she bluntly said in realization. “That, or you're trolling me,” she sighed, then, she gestured to the girl sleeping at my side. “That's Maricela Clara de los Santos; she's a Démoniaque Sampaguita Fleurette, which is basically an equivalent of a demon to us humans. You can take a look at her student ID, if you don't believe me; it should say it there.”

I looked at the sleeping girl and back to the irritable blue-eyed woman. “I highly doubt that anyone as pretty as her would be a horrible demon,” I said stubbornly which then caused the nurse to facepalm with a loud smack.

“Believe what you will; ask her later if you're that adamant on not believing me. Just keep in mind that someone's bound to slap you for thinking of the stereotypes,” the woman sighed, standing up as she put out her cigarette in an ashtray. “Anyways, I'm the school's nurse, people call me Miss Mai. I specialize in medical related problems when it comes to humans and vampires despite being a human myself, so if you have any questions then you're free to stop by the infirmary.”

“…vampire…” I murmured thoughtfully. “You said I was a former human like that lady said…”

“Well obviously,” Miss Mai rolled her eyes as she looked at me once more. “Ah… right, you've got amnesia. To put it bluntly, you drank a vampire's blood.”

The conversation was no doubt confusing me, and I was about to ask more about it until the girl at my side stirred. Maricela had woken up.

“Yong Soo…?” she murmured sleepily, looking up at me. Her brown eyes reminded me of chocolates, and as if I was stuck in a trance, I wasn't able to do anything but blink at her. Her voice did seem familiar, and if she was the girl who screamed because of me, then I could only feel guilty about it all. “Thank goodness you're alright!” she exclaimed,  hugging me tightly. “When you fell out of the window I was so worried…” Maricela murmured. As she pulled away from the hug, she had a relieved smile.

Now I was confused. “…I fell out of the window?” I asked curiously. Though I recalled hearing that I wouldn't have survived the fall when I woke up earlier, the information was finally processed in my head.

Miss Mai added onto the missing details. “You fell out of the second story window; the glass shattered too, but thankfully the student council president was there along with our vice and secretary. Due to your girlfriend's insistence—something about you wanting to become something other than human anyways—they had you drink the president's vampire blood in order to sustain your life for a while longer while the vice carefully took out the glass; the secretary went to go get some blood packs provided by the school's cafeteria. Really, it was probably the only way to keep you alive.”

“…really?” I blinked; it still seemed… unrealistic to me. Mythical creatures couldn't possibly exist… could they?

“W-wait a minute here, I'm not his- w-we're not-” Maricela spoke up, seeming to be a bit flustered until the door opened.

“Hey, Yong Soo, right? How're ya holdin' up?” An auburn-haired girl with light tan skin entered the room with a tennis racket in hand. “You ended up screaming quite a bit. Well, you got turned into a vampire after all so that was sort of expected… but given the fact you would've died right away otherwise… I'd say it was worth it,” she gave a grin.

“Who…?” I raised a brow at the new girl.

“We're on the tennis team,” she huffed, rolling her eyes. “We've talked before, don't you remember? I'm Naida Horvat, half-Dämonisch Adelais—er… half-demon to you humans—and I'm vice captain of the girl's tennis team? Does none of this ring a bell? I literally explained this stuff to you the other day.”

I couldn't really remember anything at all, so I merely shook my head. “How's it possible that you two are demons but with a different name?” Mai gave me a blank look.

“Fleurettes are specifically girls while Dämonisch Adelais' are more of 'turned-into-a-demon-through-a-complicated-process'. Really, there's a shit ton of confusing stuff about the whole process, but this is simply how it is; it's just the way things are on Lisle Holow. Look, I know it's confusing and difficult to adapt to it because of what happened, but just get over it and accept it 'cause this is reality; those mythical creatures that humans write about are real.”

The light-haired brunette spoke up, lazily waving her hand. “You're a Human-Turned Vampire, you shouldn't need to worry about our species since pretty much everyone just refers to us as demons because of the humans,” Naida said bluntly.

“Ah, not that you can't care about us- it's just that vampires and demons are different in various ways, so it can be rather confusing!” Maricela gave a sheepish laugh.

“No, I really did mean that as in 'you don't have to give a shit about us' kind of thing,” Naida said, raising a brow at how Maricela seemed to give an excuse. “You won't benefit from knowing our species unless it's to kill us, to be exact… or unless you're an outright geek or doing it for something.”

“Anyways,” Mai rolled her eyes, turning to look at Maricela and Naida. “I believe that Im Yong Soo has temporary amnesia,” the nurse sighed. “Technically it's a miracle that he's survived that fall. If you weren't a human you wouldn't really understand how we're likely to die as easily as that, not to mention he turned into a vampire after all of that so there was a lot of pain,” with a dry chuckle, Mai seemed to be narrowing her eyes at Naida in particular. She then gave a small cough. “As relieved as you all must be that he survived… go back to class. Iris already lectured me about letting students skip her class simply because they wanted to, and I'm obligated to follow my contract and promises despite them being rather annoying,” she let out a simple sigh as she sat back in her seat.

The girl's tennis team's vice captain had frowned, placing a hand on her hip. “If you must know, Miss Mai, I came here to say that I saw someone push that guy-” she gestured to me. “-out the window. I didn't see who it was, but there's no doubt in my mind that they're a student here at Lisle Holow. Seeing as you're pretty much in charge of the student council, I thought it'd be best for me to inform you because you guys are all working on this case.”

“Wait, why would anyone want to push Yong Soo out the window…?” Maricela had frowned, looking at me worriedly for a moment before looking at Naida and Mai.

“Who knows, I'm just here to report what I saw,” Naida shrugged before giving a small wave with a wry smile. She seemed to have been looking in my direction. “Good luck… cause you're gonna need it.” With that now said, Naida had left the infirmary.

The room seemed to have grown awkwardly quiet. “I wonder why anyone would push me outta the window,” I said with a sheepish grin. I hope no one hates me, especially to go so far as to try and attempt murder?

“…According to your profile, you live in District 16. That's near District 17 which is known to be the shopping district,” Mai murmured more for herself as she seemed to have highlighted a piece of paper. “…you work part-time at 17's cafe on Sunday afternoon to night, and Tuesday after school; your boss is Mr. Starlight… Mrs. Starlight's husband.”

“It's kinda creepy that you know that much about me… and I don't even know a thing about myself,” I pointed out warily.

“It's important information; the school needs to keep a tabs on all of our students, especially after the 20 Year War ended,” Mai dismissed my skepticism with practiced ease as she looked at Maricela. “Given that you're his girlfriend, is this information correct?”

“W-well yeah, it is but you really should know that I'm not his-” Maricela waved her arms slightly in protest.

Mai interrupted her. “That's all I needed to know,” she let out a sigh as she sauntered over to me. I was about to question her until she stared at me straight in the eyes with an intimidating expression on her face. “Yong Soo… you're going to need to remember what happened on Sunday night. So far, you're the most suspicious.”

For a moment, it almost seemed as if I was told that the world was going to end. Perhaps it was because of how serious Mai appeared to be… regardless, hearing that I was suspicious honestly didn't make me feel great.

“Wait… what do you mean…?” I asked, inching closer to the edge where Maricela was, feeling a bit afraid of how the lazy nurse had changed her demeanor.

Mai held a neutral look on her face, as if her next words couldn't phase her at all. “Mrs. Starlight, the school's music teacher and coach of the girl's tennis team was found dead on Monday morning, August 14th; her estimated time of death was roughly on Sunday night and she was in district 16—near your street, actually—on the night she was murdered. By process of elimination, you're one of our only suspects so far.”
Any similarities to characters, settings, scripts, actual schools, or stories from other pieces of literature or media are coincidental.

I actually finished this weeks ago. I was only indecisive about something I needed to do before posting this story.
This story's timeline is ahead of the main story. However there are no spoilers here because Mrs. Starlight's death is already known.
