Summary: As Halloween approaches, closer than before, Ashton decides to confront (which is a rare occurrence) Anastasiya about her recent and odd behavior. Yet… why does she find someone crying?

Characters Involved: Ashton Howe, Katarina Horvat, and Anastasiya Volkov + Narrator [Yeah, my trio’s mainly involved ahahahaaa--]

Characters Mentioned: Wyatt U. Hawthorne, Maximus the Unicorn, Callum Marshall, Tedmund Adelmar, and Alastair C. Frutensia

[Hope you gals (at least, I'm pretty sure you're all girls--) won’t mind that I only mentioned your characters? And had Ashton hate on only Wyatt through the narration but yeah--//kicked]

She was sitting down on the floor near the back of the library against the wall beside a bookshelf where hardly anyone had ever gone to. A book was in her lap as she ever so gently traced the dots imprinted onto a certain type of paper, namely the area of the author’s name. The girl had her long pale blonde hair down rather than the usual twin tails and hair accessories she more often donned. Her dull light blue orbs staring at the ground, it seemed like.

For a girl who sat in such a peaceful setting, she was crying. The brunette frowned at the sight, and for a moment the crossdresser briefly wondered why the older girl was crying. If Ashton Howe couldn’t understand Braille, then she wouldn’t have understood her friend’s tears as she does now when she squints and tries to look at the book in the girl’s hands.

Yet another book created by Anne-Marie Cornett, a rather famous French author in the Wizarding world and mother of a blind girl; that girl being Anastasiya Volkov who was now crying.

When did this occur and how did it begin? She would ask herself and no one else. No one knew the answer anyway, and the Hufflepuff herself has no clue Ashton would assume. Anastasiya Volkov was in love, and for Ashton, love was an emotion far beyond her comprehensions. The senior would countlessly claim that they were friends and that she couldn’t possibly feel such an affinity towards him because of their ‘friendship’. Ashton had hoped that it was the case, which it clearly wasn’t when the girl began to talk about him almost all the time.

Their friendship never began with appearances… well, for Anastasiya’s part it wasn’t. She was only temporarily blind for heaven’s sake and Ashton could never stand a pride-filled egotistical woman. Thankfully for Katarina, the annoying girl wasn’t egotistical… just a tad on the annoying side. Going back to the topic on Anastasiya’s friendship with that annoying… guy, Wyatt… her senior claimed that he was kind, and he didn’t pity her for her lack of sight. He did, of course, occasionally tease her, but Ashton couldn’t argue with that since she herself would do that to the older girl. Apparently he was really nice, but Ashton refused to believe that since they hadn’t known each other for even a month.

Anastasiya had said that making her heart pound was what her friends did, with or without their knowing; Wyatt was only a little different, perhaps because she was happy to finally have a friend who wasn’t a girl (probably due to her slight phobia of men). From Katarina’s perspective, Anastasiya grew much more careless… and clumsier… if that was possible. She probably wouldn’t be clumsy if she could see. Though she thankfully had fewer injuries than before after meeting Wyatt, and because of him, Anastasiya had met more people at Hogwarts, seeing that Katarina had those random bouts of depression while Ash would constantly avoid people like the plague.

“That’s not possible.”

As Anastasiya had spoken those words when Katarina decided to attempt to play a bit of matchmaker after discerning the situation, never had Ashton seen such a solemn expression on the seventh year. It was unbelievable and her heart ached at knowing her friend was sad whether she was entirely conscious of it or not. How naïve and oblivious was the older Hufflepuff for not realizing how she felt towards that—in Ashton’s eyes—detestable man in a short time? Katarina agreed that it was possible to fall in love so quickly, though perhaps, just perhaps… it wasn’t love. Ashton hoped it was admiration at most and nothing more than that… but may it was the way she said it that it bothered both Ashton and Katarina… especially the third year. Katarina was a rather observant girl despite being somewhat loud and odd, after all; she played the role of the fool rather well, but how long would she be able to handle it? Ashton had not a single clue.

Anyways, as Katarina was an observant yet odd girl, she had this… habit, of figuring out everyone’s most hated characteristics about themselves from personality to appearances. Her assumption for their older friend in regards to this topic was understandable enough.  Height was no doubt a contributing factor; she was short for a girl her age so perhaps when her blindness is lifted she would grow a couple of inches taller (hopefully). Anastasiya, all in all, had a low self-esteem with no connections to her appearance. The list could go on (for everyone it always could), but that wasn't her main focus. For all Ashton cared, friendship was far more important to her than faults.

“It’s not possible.” That phrase was a double-edged sword. As her attention was indeed at the idea of Wyatt and her being attracted to one another as a simple romanticized idea, it would not occur and Ashton was sure of it. Ashton knew it, Katarina knew it, and to hell with it all, Ashton was sure that even everyone would get it. They were opposites, and you know the saying of how opposites attract? Well they don’t in these circumstances. That caused the divorce in Ashton’s life (and she was glad she didn’t have a younger sibling when the divorce came). Opposites attracting had caused the divorce in Anastasiya’s life as well; no interacting with her other parent when she was staying with one or the other, no phone calls or communications. It all lasts until she goes back to school where she will, at the very least, receive the occasional letter.

Yes… Katarina’s parents did show that opposites attract could work out, but the situation was different. They grew into love, they were not forced to marry because of blood nor did they happen to be there at the same place or time like the Tri-Wizard Tournament.

As Anastasiya had agreed, even Maximus the unicorn was a better fit for him when Katarina had told the older girl about what she heard from gossiping students!

“Apparently she’s jealous of Maximus the unicorn.”

[[Wait… what did you just say…?

Katarina had said: “Apparently she’s jealous of Maxi-“

I got that! I meant like… seriously…? A freaking unicorn of all magical beings…?

Yes, a unicorn; I kid you not.

Are you sure you’re not going insane narrator?

I assure you, sir or madam, that I have not gone insane and that Anastasiya of the Volkov Family is actually somewhat envious of a unicorn that can make the guy nervous. So shut it and let me continue my job.]]

Ashton was obviously dumbfounded at what Katarina had told her. Though she knew that Katarina was serious, after all, it was Anastasiya’s first evident crush; of course, Anastasiya herself hadn’t noticed it yet as well as everyone else other than Katarina and Ashton. Though now that Ashton rethinks it, wasn’t it more of an unrequited love by how much Anastasiya gives an adamant denial and constant clarification that he couldn’t possibly have a crush on her and vice versa as they are only friends? And it seems that a unicorn certainly would bring out a side of Wyatt that Anastasiya had never seen… metaphorically speaking, of course.

To no end, Ashton was growing irritable at the situation as well as frustrated. Her friend was in love with that dreadful and infuriatingSlytherin, a person whom she hated the most of everyone she currently knows. It was random, like all feelings are. Not a single part of Ashton’s calculations—not even her intuition—would have even the slightest suggestion that Anastasiya would fall for someone like… him. She believed that maybe, just maybe she would fall for someone else… maybe Callum, or Tedmund. They were both kind (to girls, for Tedmund’s case), though she was sure that Anastasiya haven’t even met them yet save for Tedmund at Hogsmeade when that guy got separated from her. Perhaps even that slightly annoying but Katarina-annoying guy, Alastair. She didn't really like Alvero or the others of whom she only knew from rumors and rumors alone, not to mention that Ashton didn't even trust the school other than for some of the Hogwarts girls and only two guys (Callum and Tedmund; Callum because she knows him, Tedmund because of how she’s seen him interact between both genders and was far more polite to the girls).

Ashton gave herself a mental facepalm. Of course Anastasiya wouldn’t even know half the people in the rumors and everyone were in different years, and two of the three guys mentioned weren’t even in Hufflepuff and Anastasiya was blind for heaven’s sake.

Long story short before Ashton rambles on even more: Ashton hates Wyatt with all of her heart and soul (and hopes he'd drop dead) and doesn't want her precious friend to get hurt from heartbreak.

There were a ton of reasons as to why Ashton couldn't trust him, her intuition came first because not once had it been wrong. He couldn't be trusted, not because he's Slytherin, but just because she didn't get him. She understood Katarina after meeting for the first time, she got that Katarina overreacts. She got that Anastasiya had sight problems before learning that she was blind; sweet and kind Anastasiya had honesty and trust to rely on, truly wearing her heart on her sleeve. That irritating man didn't wear a heart on his sleeve nor was he entirely trustworthy; he was confusing as well as... civil, Ashton supposes. After all, he never bothered to start drama with her and appeared to be passive to her ever-growing hatred when it became obvious that she didn't like him ever since that first day of Hogsmeade for the seventh year. All Ashton knows was that after he met with her and the two seemed to get along and would continue to talk, he began to crawl his way into Anastasiya's life, ultimately affecting hers in the end. She hated it even if her complaints aren't spoken.

Ashton twitched, before remembering the situation to which she frowned. Anastasiya was crying while holding her mother's book written in Braille, and she was sure that it wasn't a book series. Currently, she hopes that this has nothing to do with Hawthorne involving heartbreak and was thinking of her mother. That was more of Katarina's specialty when it came to comforting.

Not many realize it, and perhaps Anastasiya's great at hiding her worries when she says she's going to stay in the library. It was odd because she normally goes to the library once or twice a week (more than that if there's a solid reason like helping with the Braille books), and stays there until its dinner time or just before curfew which varies.

This time, Anastasiya seemed to be uneasy as Halloween approaches.  She should be enthusiastic and excited because Katarina would be bringing her magic camera. Ashton frowned. She knew it couldn't be because that guy wasn't going with her; that would be a stupid reason for crying.

"Just a few more months..."

That silent murmur was all Ashton heard and knew all too well. She was a fan of Anne-Marie Cornett, a French author and former researcher; it was one of the unspoken clues that showed Anastasiya was Cornett's beloved daughter who was blind. ‘Just a few more months’ was the main protagonist’s phrase, Eleanor Winchester from Je Pense à Toi, because it was stated that the curse would be lifted when she is of age so she had the habit of saying a 'few' more months, as if hoping for comfort as every year passes by.

"I was told that on my 17th birthday I will no longer be blind."

Now that Ashton remembered the wondrous book series written by Cornett, was there truly guarantee that Anastasiya won’t stay blind when she turned 17? It was said that the Winchester Curse, or rather, the Volkov Curse was a traditional curse. Wizards of the Volkov Family become blind at a very young age, and as they grow without relying on what they see, as well as feel a sensation of what death could be, the Volkov child becomes a splendid wizard and becomes somewhat courageous. The curse will be lifted when they are of age, which is, of course, 17. As they can see again, almost as if they were 'reborn', they become fearless and successful.

However... as Eleanor Winchester was based off on Cornett's daughter, Anastasiya, then that would mean there were implications that Anastasiya was cursed by someone. The problem with this was simple – Anastasiya can't see unless the person dies or knows how to lift the curse, which would happen if she really does stay blind.

What made the situation all the more serious as well as odd was that Anastasiya didn't even seem to mind. The ability to see just wasn't her actual wish. So if the seventh year wasn't crying over love or for longing for sight, what would make her cry her eyes out?

"I'm not afraid of dying."

Fear... what was her fear..? It wasn't really guys, so what was it? How odd for someone to not fear death… but then again, ‘unafraid of toil’ was part of Hufflepuff’s saying Ashton recalled. However, surely Anastasiya would have a fear that wasn’t death… but not a single idea popped up in Ashton’s mind.

Ashton stayed fixated in that particular spot that seemed so close to the Hufflepuff. No movement was made as the Ravenclaw stared, her usual blank expression now warped to regret and disappointment, no doubt disappointed in herself. She didn’t approach the crying senior, nor had she known what to really say. It all seemed to be rubbish, her ideas and thoughts to saying things of comfort were all lies it sounded like and she didn’t want to seem as such.

Normally one would expect a friend to instantly comfort a friend, despite knowing how to comfort or not. Comforting was something Ashton couldn’t do, it made her feel even more distant from everyone, especially her friends. She couldn’t do something like being there for a friend. After a few moments, Ashton turned around and left the library. Her face showed a hint of pain as she left.

“You can pick up broken glass and keep it together… but in the end, how much can [you] really handle?”

If you decide to bother with the Extra, then be aware that it's a character you might or might not know. Depends on what I wanna do with my OCs and if I want them to suffer a bit <33 //shot

~~~~~ EXTRAS ~~~~~
The boy frowned at the girl’s words. “You can pick up broken glass and keep it together… but in the end, how much can [you] really handle?” she questioned absentmindedly as she looked out of the classroom window. It seemed that it would continue to keep raining.
“What do you mean?” he frowned.
“…it’s nothing,” she let out a fake smile, and for once she realized that the boy didn’t even notice how fake it was. He used to be able to recognize those small details. “I’m going to go now, I asked Anastasiya to tutor me for something.”
“…whatever… Just keep your distance from that guy,” he said irritably.
She turned around to face the speaker; it confused her as she began to frown at her friend’s words. “…What…?”
“Don’t get too close to them. They’re no good.”
“Linda, Linda… words, Linda, words,” the girl evidently joked. “That’s not descriptive enough,” she soon frowned. “I get that you don’t like the thought of it. Really, I do. You just want our senior to be happy and safe and you can’t possibly trust her friends, right?” she looked at him. “Are you really sure that they’re not trustworthy?”
“Of course I don’t trust them… but who she trusts isn’t up to me.”
“…sorry, but I had to ask. Hey, just because you stopped smiling and became more apathetic… going so far as to lose interest in almost everything other than your friends… it doesn’t mean you’ve lost your emotions.”
“What are you…?”
She shook her head with a smile, almost giving off a laugh. “It’s nothing!” she grinned. “I’m just being an idiot is all~!” she said with a forced cheeriness as she left the classroom. As the door closed, her goofy grin was nowhere on her as she chuckled wearily. “I’m worried that even if you notice her, you’ll never notice how you feel, you big idiot.”
